{"id":553,"name":"P\u00e1ll Bj\u00f6rnsson","url":"","description":"P\u00e1ll Bj\u00f6rnsson studied history and philosophy at the University of Iceland, Universitaet G\u00f6ttingen and Universitaet Freiburg. He completed his Ph.D. with a specialization in modern German history from the University of Rochester (NY). He was a research fellow at the Institut fuer europaeische Geschichte in Mainz, the Center for Research in the Humanities at the University of Iceland, and the Nordeuropa Institut at the Humboldt Universitaet zu Berlin. He has been teaching at the University of Akureyri in northern Iceland since 2005 where he is currently a professor of history and modern studies. He served as the chairperson of the Icelandic Association of Historians for a while, and for a number of years he was the editor of Saga, the main historical journal in Iceland. Doing research on modern history of Germany and Iceland, he has particularly focused on liberalism, national identities, and gender. His monograph on the commemoration and afterlife of J\u00f3n Sigur\u00f0sson (1811\u20131879), the main national hero in Iceland (J\u00f3n forseti allur?
