The\u00a0conference was a forum for discussion on the position of Iceland in the\u00a0International Community, inasmuch as the position, influence and interests of Iceland in\u00a0international relations are currently and will continue to be important issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The following topics were addressed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Development cooperation, the Government&#8217;s issues of emphasis, Iceland\u2019s foreign aid policy, refugees,\u00a0immigrants, asylum seekers, and assistance in Iceland.<\/li>\n<li>Attitudes of political parties and stakeholder organisations towards NATO, EU, EEA,\u00a0EFTA, Nordic cooperation (Nordic Council) and the UN.<\/li>\n<li>Communities in the Arctic: environment, indigenous people, resources and legal\u00a0environment, politics, safety of navigation, institutions and the legal development of\u00a0the Arctic region.<\/li>\n<li>Foreign policy, defence and security: \u00a0cross-party political consensus on national\u00a0security; cooperation with NATO, the United States, Europe and the Nordic\u00a0countries; Schengen cooperation: economic\u00a0security, maritime security, security in the Arctic region, natural\u00a0hazards and loss and damage at sea.<\/li>\n<li>Iceland&#8217;s international trade: relations with Europe (EEA and EU), trade\u00a0opportunities in Asia, the United\u00a0States, export of fish and regulation and protection of the fishing stock.<\/li>\n<li>Discourse on international affairs in the media: Iceland&#8217;s international image;\u00a0politics, whaling, culture, nature, tourism and equality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The University of Akureyri and Akureyri Academy held the Conference in\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
